Program Description:

This live webinar will equip clinicians with advanced skills in providing EMDR to any person living with a physical, developmental, or sensory disability. This course will aid in case conceptualization, building an Anti-Ableist perspective, creating an inclusive practice, and assessing appropriate adaptations to the standard protocol based on client needs.

Abstract:

This 2-hour live webinar will aim to equip EMDR clinicians in creating an inclusive EMDR practice that is accessible to any person regardless of their disability. Participants will learn the definition of the term “disability”, breaking the term down into 3 main categories of physical, developmental/intellectual, and sensory disabilities.  Participants will also learn the definition of ableism, how it is a systemic issue in our society, and how psychotherapy has historically enabled the dehumanization or “othering” of people with disabilities.

This overview will lead into a discussion of how participants can identify deficits and create a more accessible practice. Examples will include ensuring ramps are available for people who cannot use stairs, remembering to have captions on when providing Telehealth sessions, being mindful of sensory sensitivities, etc. This section of the presentation will also emphasize participants examining their own implicit biases. Participants will watch a short YouTube video created for Down Syndrome Awareness Day, titled “Assume I Can” and will have an opportunity to discuss their reflections.

Each of the 8 phases of EMDR will be reviewed and examples of adaptations that can be made based on client needs will be provided.  Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on clients they may currently have and identify adaptations that can be made in their EMDR treatment.

The presentation will end with questions and discussion.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will leave this training with a better understanding of systemic ableism and 3 ways to make their practice more accessible and inclusive for people living with disabilities

  2. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 adaptations that can be made to the standard EMDR protocol for clients who are Neurodiverse or disabled

  3. Participants will learn how to explore and be curious about their own implicit biases and assumptions around neurodiversity and disabilities
